With a growing portfolio, we are the world’s leading hotel management company. For 59 years, owners, developers, and guests have recognized the Interstate difference: unmatched innovation, expertise, and success in the hospitality industry. Since our founding, we’ve consistently delivered exceptional results for hotel brands, real estate investors, ownership groups, publicly traded REITs, privately held companies, and private equity funds. The future holds even more promise.

A true success story, Interstate Hotels & Resorts started small. In 1960, we began with a single motel in Pennsylvania. We first expanded to develop and operate Howard Johnson properties throughout the state. Then, in the early 1970s, we began our long partnership with Marriott, building on our expertise in hospitality industry development, ownership, and operations. By the end of the decade, we owned and operated four hotels with 1,800 rooms across four states. Our upward trajectory would continue.

Our Story

Interstate opens its first full-service hotel, and one of Marriott’s first franchised properties, the Green Tree Marriott in Pittsburgh.

Our growth skyrocketed to new levels in the 1980s, with new offerings including new-build hotel project management, interior design and FF&E services. We opened and managed The Charles Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts. We developed additional Marriott-branded properties: the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott; the Sawgrass Marriott in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida; and the San Francisco Marriott Fisherman’s Wharf. As the decade came to a close, we operated 25 hotels in partnership with Marriott. We also created relationships with other prominent hotel companies, leading to an extraordinary 29 hotels with more than 10,300 rooms in 15 states in our portfolio. Much more was to come, soon.

Interstate forms Continental Design & Supply (CDS), providing ground-up, new-build hotel project management, interior design and FF&E services.

The 1990s were pivotal. We began the decade by forming our Crossroads Hospitality select-service division, which quickly doubled its portfolio. Then, our Initial Public Offering expanded our scope and prominence in the financial markets. We were subsequently acquired and returned to being a privately-held company. By the end of the decade, 230 hotels were under our management, including the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City. We also continued our close relationship with Marriott, expanding our portfolio to include the Courtyard by Marriott Times Square South. And, in a sign of future growth horizons, we expanded internationally to three hotels in Moscow.

The new millennium arrived with abundant opportunities for us in the burgeoning worldwide hospitality industry. We expanded our hotel management portfolio in Moscow and entered the United Kingdom marketplace with three boutique hotels in London. We also expanded our footprint to Mexico, India, Belgium and Ireland. In the U.S., our Crossroads Hospitality division began its relationship with the Aloft brand. Additionally, we grew our family of affiliated companies with a management portfolio of 13 hotels for the Blackstone Group L.P., one of the world’s premier private equity investment firms. The decade concluded with our 50th year as the leading hotel management company and the prospect of continued strong growth.
